The Basix:

Anyone can learn to use Kick Stix with a little pratice. The best way to start is to rest one end of the baton on the ground and begin to pass it back and forth between the wands. Slowly raise it off the ground (see diagrams). Contact only the upper portion of the baton.

The next step is to get the baton to spin horizontally: When the baton is touching the right wand, gently pull it towards you. When the baton is touching the left want, gently push it away from you. Before you know it, the baton will be in a horizontal spin moving in a clockwise direction. (This is the best direction to learn, the majority of stix jugglers use a clockwise spin: if you learn to spin clockwise first, you will be able to retrieve passes from these people.)

Suggestions:
  • Think of each time you contact the baton as a gentle redirection of motion, not a forceful manipulation of it.
  • Try practicing Kick Stix in a group.
  • Try practicing Kick Stix to music: the rhythm of the music will help you.
  • If the Stix get too greasy or dirty, the wands may loose some traction. Cleanse Kick Stix with a small amount of ammonia-based household glass cleaner to restore optimum performance.
  • Be patient. Learning the basix will take time, but once you do, the rest will come easily.

Put it all together and it looks like this:
